Vintage Love Letter Canvas

I recently began reading love letters from the 19th century. The letters were so thoughtful and beautiful. Even the cursive writing was elegant. Those letters inspired me to create a craft project.

I started by reusing a canvas from a previous project. I hadn’t used it in a while, and I did not want to waste a good canvas and throw it away.

Next, I searched online for “antique love letters” and “19th century love letters”. I printed four of the letters I found under the image results. I didn’t know how many sheets would cover the canvas so I printed three copies of each letter.

Then, I cut out the letters and began gluing them to the canvas. I spread one coat of Mod Podge on the back of the papers and gently laid them on the canvas. I made sure to smooth out any bubbles with my finger.

I let the canvas dry overnight because I wasn’t sure what to do with it. I finally decided to stencil some words on top of the letters. I found this cute and inexpensive stencil that says “A true love story never ends”. I thought it was very fitting for the theme of the project.

I used a black Sharpie marker to write the phrase on the canvas, and I kept the stencil in place with painter’s tape. I didn’t want to use paint because I felt like I would mess up. The marker gave me a lot more control, and it didn’t run or smudge.

Here’s the finished canvas:

I love it, and it looks great on my mantel!
